Peter Simon is an internationally working sound artist, field recordist and researcher in the field of sound art.
He studied at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM), where he completed his master’s degree with a focus on sound art and installation. He previously studied physics at the Ruhr University in Bochum – a combination of science and art that still shapes his acoustic practice today.
Research and artistic practice
His work focuses on sound ecology, psychoacoustics and bioacoustics.
The focus is on research into sound as an information carrier – and the question of how acoustic communication influences the relationship between the individual, the environment and society.
Since the 1990s, Peter Simon has been continuously developing his own sound compositions and sound installations, which are located between musique concrète, electronic sound research and experimental audio art. His works combine aesthetic experience, scientific observation and ecological perspectives.
Collaborations and performances
Peter Simon has been working with Freya Hattenberger as a performance duo since 2008.
Together they explore different living environments, forms of communication and resonance spaces using sound art and performance art.
Sound installations and exhibitions
His sculptural sound and video installations, multi-channel compositions and sound performances have been shown at numerous international festivals, museums and galleries.
From 2010 to 2015, he curated the sound art program “Lautsprecher” at Museum Ostwall Dortmund, which was dedicated to the presentation and mediation of contemporary sound art.
He also produces radio plays, acoustic essays and radiophonic sound features for renowned broadcasters such as WDR, BR, NDR, Deutschlandradio Kultur and medienwerk nrw.
